What's Driving New Zealand's Wine Boom in China?

Who Are the Key Wine Importers in Malaysia? / South Australian Shiraz Shines at IWSC

I’ve just returned from New Zealand, where I spoke at the country’s wine business forum with a 30-minute presentation on Asia’s dynamic wine markets for New Zealand producers. It was an inspiring trip — not only for the conversations but also for the chance to visit some of New Zealand’s most celebrated wineries, including Cloudy Bay, Pyramid Valley, and Greystone. Stay tuned for more reporting to come.

The centrepiece of my visit was digging into why New Zealand wine is seeing blistering growth in China. Don’t miss our full report here, with interviews with key importers.

Elsewhere, Chinese wineries are making inroads abroad: five Ningxia producers will debut at Australia’s Dan Murphy’s this month. But at home, the story looks very different. Half-year results from China’s listed wine companies point to mounting challenges, and even the country’s only listed e-commerce wine company, Wine World, isn’t immune.

We also spotlight Malaysia’s leading wine importers — a market that, despite its Muslim-majority population, holds real opportunities for producers. On the competition front, IWSC revealed its top Australian Shiraz winners, which highlighted how the country’s winemaking style has evolved.

And finally, Hong Kong entertainment tycoon Albert Yeung is stirring excitement among collectors with the upcoming sale of his wine cellar.
