China’s Wine Market Is Moving at Warp Speed, And Leaving Shops Behind

Why China’s Tobacco and Alcohol Shops Are Struggling to Survive/ Moet Hennessy Exits India's Wine Production

If there is one word that defines China, it is speed.

In the early 2000s, the country’s economic rise was often described as “warp speed”. Today, in the drinks and broader consumer retail sectors, that velocity has taken on a new form: instant retail.

Waima Alcohol Delivery, the wine and spirits platform backed by delivery giant Meituan, now operates more than 2,400 front warehouses across dozens of cities and provinces, underscoring how quickly on-demand consumption has scaled.

At the same time, traditional tobacco and alcohol shops are disappearing just as rapidly. Recent data suggests that as many as 900 stores are closing every day.

The shift is not only structural but behavioural. According to a recent report by the China Alcoholic Drinks Association (CADA), in collaboration with Meituan and trade media, residential addresses have become the primary destination for alcohol delivery as consumption moves from planned purchases to on-demand, near-instant gratification.

Beyond our coverage of instant retail, this week’s stories also include insights from ASC Fine Wines, where Don St. Pierre explains why he believes China’s wine market is being rediscovered, as well as a look at Ningxia’s Xige Winery and its push towards a potential IPO.

Elsewhere, weakening sales and consumption are weighing on European producers, prompting efforts to divert unsold red and rosé into industrial alcohol. Meanwhile, Moët Hennessy is exiting wine production in India, selling its sparkling wine business to local producer Sula.

Also, don’t miss our interviews with Hong Boyong on why building a successful wine list in China requires unlearning what works in the West, and with sommelier Yang Hang, a fixture in Chengdu’s wine scene.
